Manfred came to NITI Aayog for two weeks in December’2016 to train the Energy Division staff on MESSAGE energy systems model of IIASA. As a talented researcher, he possessed the dual skills of an energy systems expert and computer code developer, a rare combination, which allowed him to become the mastermind behind MESSAGE model. He not only developed and continuously enhanced the MESSAGE model over several decades but, more importantly, he also shared his knowledge by educating many generations of experts from developing countries in energy systems analysis and energy planning. He was a friend of India and was passionate in his desire to help India establish the model. Despite his numerous professional friends in Delhi, he did not take any time off from his day-long schedule of training the NITI officials. His passing away is a personal loss to many staffers here and a professional loss to the cause of Indian modeling.
At the time of his passing, he had been working with the IIASA Energy Program for nearly 40 years, having joined in May 1979. His exceptional judgment and longstanding experience will be sorely missed.
A memorial ceremony will be held on the 15th of May 2017 at 14:30 at Feuerhalle Simmering, Vienna.
